It is estimated that 8 million people are suffering from an eating disorder, 7 million women and one million men. Eating disorders in women usually occur when they are at the weight they should be while men that develop eating disorders usually are overweight. The image of a person with an eating disorder in our culture is commonly portrayed by thin young women with anorexia. Men have a multitude of “acceptable” body types in our culture. This ideal ranges from hyper-thin male models to hyper-muscular Hulk Hogans. Women feel they must adhere to the thin female ideal which makes eating disorders in women significantly higher than for men. Women with eating disorders tend to be perfectionists, they have to always please others, they're sensitive to criticism, and self-doubting. They have to always feel like they are in control and want attention. They also don't handle change well but are future- oriented. Other reasons are they have a troubled relationship with their parent(s) or high expectations from their family.
