Why Does Cold Weather Make You Sick?

Anysha

Does cold weather bring sickness every year? This is a myth that has been debated over the years. During the winter  people just want to be inside where it is warm. By spending more time indoors with others this puts everyone in close proximity to one another. Being close to a lot of people makes germs and viruses spread faster and easier. In the winter time people run their heat. Using heat can spread germs easier because the air is drier. Studies show that it is not the actual cold and chilly climate that makes a person sick. In a study in New England Journal of Medicine subjects were exposed to germs of the common cold. Some were exposed while at room temp and some were exposed while in cold air. The conclusion showed that there was no direct affect on the climate. Why was there no affect? The human body reacts to cold air by using large amounts of energy to keep itself warm. Since germs are being passed the immune system is over working with trying to stay warm and also fight germs.
