What is the difference between someones religion and spirituality?

Everyone knows that religion and spirituality are different. Religion is following a pathway to God through their religions readings and beliefs as Spirituality is finding ones own path through values and purpose in life. Yet how does someone distinguish the difference between their Religion and their spirituality. According to social scientists 346 individuals from a wide range of religions all considered themselves spiritual but not religious. Many people sought religion as church attendance, and some type of orthodox belief as well as rules to follow. Their idea of spirituality was belief in high power as well as practice and beliefs that were unorthodox. Individuals that considered themselves religious used the idea of their religion to create their own spirituality. The main basis of the values and beliefs as well as their high power was revolved around the religion they practiced. The people who claimed to not be religious used their own ideas and values to come up with the basis of their own spirituality. Some stated that they were raised religious but didn't formally practice the religion. So when coming up with the basis of their spirituality they did have some religious influence but not as much as someone who practices being religious.
