Unlike a lot of diseases, cancer has been found to have a higher rate in more developed countries than less developed countries. In 2008, there were 255 cancer cases diagnosed per 100,000 people in the more developed regions, compared to 149 cases in the less developed regions. In some specific kinds of cancer, such as stomach cancer, the number is higher in less developed cancers but overall there are more cancers that have higher rates in the more developed countries and regions. For all cancers the rate was 1.7 times higher in the more developed countries. Some cancers such as melanoma and kidney cancer were as much as three times higher in the more developed regions compared to the less developed regions.
One reason for this is because the more developed countries have invented and have access to more advanced technology, which can cause higher rates of cancer. Things such as cigarettes and tanning beds are so easily availably for people in the more developed countries, even though these things can be very harmful.
