The current medical treatment for these conditions is one of two medications that have an FDA warning for ADHD. The current medications available are Strattera and Ritalin. Strattera is a norepinephrine-reuptake inhibitor that acts in the brain to decrease levels of norepinephrine, an excitatory neurotransmitter. Ritalin is a stimulant that has been on the market for many years and used by many students. There are non-pharmacologic steps as well like coaching and support groups that can provide supports to students that suffer from ADHD. Overall the treatment for ADHD is not just a pill but also requires support from others and acceptance. A combination of one of the drugs on the market for ADHD and supportive care can be successful in the treatment ADHD for college students.

What is ADHD and what is the best treatment for college students?
In order to treat ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder) one must first look at the cause of ADHD and the classifications of the disease. There are three main types of ADHD; Predominately Inattentive, Predominately Hyperactive- Impulsive and Combined Inattentive and Hyperactive-Impulsive. The first of these types is characterized by short attention span and difficulty concentration and is what we normally see. The second is when someone can not sit still or is active no matter what environment they are in and it is almost like they are nervous all of the time. The combined version of the disease takes both types into account and is a combination of difficulty sitting still and trouble with attention.
