Are there proven benefits to prayer in healing disease states like cancer?

I found a study that was conducted at the University of Wisconsin Medical Center on breast patients that participated in online support and prayer groups.  This study found that the patients were able to have positive psychological and behavioral effects.  The patients were surveyed before entering an online prayer group and again 4 months after they had been participating in the group and studies found that these individuals had positive outcomes.  The patients often put trust in God and are able to find less stress and cope with the illness much better which often leads to better outcomes from a treatment standpoint.

There was another article that talked about observations that doctors at the Duke Medical Center had observed and that was that cancer patients with a God live longer.  There is also mention that prayer ca relax patients and relieve stress and almost act like a valium when done in the correct way.  The prayer does not just come from the patient but also people outside the hospital that are religious and do not want to see those with cancer suffer.  It is amazing that something as simple as prayer can have such a dramatic outcome on ones disease state and life but it goes to show that every little bit helps and God is a mighty and powerful figure.
